Experiments were carried out to investigate the performance of an inverse diffusion flame (IDF) with circumferentially arranged ports (CAP) and burning butane. Flame appearance, temperature distribution and the emission characteristics of the flame were reported in this paper. The burner was made up of one central air jet and twelve fuel jets distributed circumferentially around the air jet, with a centre-to-centre distance of 11mm between the air jet and the fuel jets. The air jet with a relatively higher jet velocity entrains the fuel from the surrounding jets towards the centre to form special flame shape which are different from the normal premixed and diffusion flames. The flame consists of two zones: an entrainment zone attached to the burner and a mixing and combustion zone on top of it. The highest temperature was found to be located away from the center at low equivalence ratio and shifted towards the center at higher equivalence ratio. In the emission measurements, the EINOx with air jet Re = 2500 were reported. For equivalence ratios at the range of 1.0≤Φ≤6.0, the EINOx curve was bell-shaped with the peak EINOx value occurring at Φ = 1.2.
